You must have heard about ferocious human beings even in this century. Yes, they exist! As much as you think civilization is a global thing and that it has put lasting end to some primitive human behavior, some people still haven’t felt the wave. The North Sentinel Island located in the Bay of Bengal off the coast of India is perhaps one of the last remaining uncivilized places in the world. No one has reportedly been able to make contact with the native inhabitants without telling touching stories.
Residents of the island are said to have extremely limited contacts with outsiders. Therefore, any one outsider who tries to explore the island always get killed and attacked. North Sentinel is such a dangerous death den that Indian government has interfered by establishing not less than a three-mile zone in an effort to prevent spread of violence.
Reports has it that two fishermen were killed by the resident tribe when their boat drifted near the island in 2006. An attempt to rescue the fishermen by Indian coastguard helicopter was repelled as they were prevented from landing by lot of volleys of arrow from the island citizens.
There has been a long reported history of attacks and violence on the island. On August 2, 1981, the ship Primrose was grounded on the island, and within a short time, men that were carrying spears and arrows are already building up on the beach as they also build their boat to reach the ship. Occupants of the ship were only saved by the heavy seas which kept the islanders away long enough for the ship’s crew to be rescued. The captain had radioed for a drop of weapon for defense but did not receive any. It would have been another sorry case for outsiders on the island.
The Indian government hasn’t because of these let the people out of their plans. For instance, after the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake, the government sent helicopter to check on the islanders. The earthquake had affected nearby highlands heavily but the Sentinelese still appeared unharmed. Instead, several clansmen were observed shooting arrows and throwing stones at the helicopter with an intention of repelling their intervention. Overall, the Sentineles people are believed to have lived between 50 and 400, and have lived in isolation on the island for over 60,000 years. The island has deep tree canopies that make it difficult to observe the tribal population from the air.
