A large chunk of the world population use social media nowadays. One of the greatest thrill in the use of the available online networking platforms is the ability to use search boxes/bars to find as much things as we can. Fortunately, there are thousands and millions of results for virtually every search made on the platforms in as much as people have uploaded lots of relating/similar stuffs to the site. From good to bad, ugly and awful, every users can expect to have as much results as they like or dislike.
Facebook has been criticized for bringing some awful results for certain word searches conducted on its portal’s search bar. Some of these disturbing and others making parents think along the line of censorship. Facebook is probably not the safe place we think it is. There are a whole lot of unfortunate realities and events that have been associated with social networking on the platform. This include fake news, murder, suicide and lots more as especially streamed from Facebook live.
It has been reported that clicking on Facebook search bar and inputting relatively innocent words could bring inappropriate and disgusting results no one wants to see or make their children see.
It has however also been confirmed that Facebook recently removed certain terms from their search portal after twitter users pointed out a few disturbing autocompleted results that popped up when they typed phrases like ‘video of’, on the portal. That reportedly brought up disgusting graphics and offensive posts. In response anyway, the spokesperson of Facebook in a statement written to Mashable said to have tackled the auto-prediction problems.
Although Facebook said to have been on the issue to create solutions to the problems, it also made it publicly clear that result suggestions on its search boxes are not necessarily its programmed suggestions but results from previous users’ searches as the software tend to remember activities on them. Therefore, the predictions are not reflective of the actual contents on the platform.
Facebook also said that they do not allow sexually explicit imageries and so have always tried to rid the platform of any such. It stresses how hard the company is working to improve the quality of their search prediction.
While Facebook has promised and is perhaps working on fixing the bugs already, the lesson here is to be cautious of the use of the platform and things to search. Also, parents are advised to watch and censor their children’s activities on the portal and even other social media platforms.
